The other famous night market in Taiwan - Luodong, Yilan

The other famous night market in Taiwan - Luodong, Yilan

When vacationing in Yilan, we found ourselves returning to the Luodong night market (羅東夜市 2 nights in the row.  There were just so many food stalls that we couldn’t sample in one sitting.  One thing you will notice here is that everything has the word Sunshin (三星) written on there, that’s because Sunshin is a district that is known for its extra-long and flavorful spring onion (scallion).

Here are the ones we visited with recommendations:

  • Sunshin Cherry Valley roasted duck roll

✅ My favorite!! The duck was tender and the dough was thin. This was the only stand we saw selling roasted duck meat. If you only have time for one stall, make it to this one!

  • Sunshin scallion meat skewer (next to the roasted duck stand)

✅ Really good deal, NT100 for 3 skewers with 3 rolls of meat covering scallions on each skewer.  But the wait was extremely long - there was only one person manning the grill so we waited 25 mins on a Friday night.

Picture on the left is the meat skewer and the top right one shows the banner for these two stalls (left one is the meat skewer and the one on the right is roasted duck)

  • Ah Du Bor (阿灶伯)

✅The angelica mutton soup (當歸羊肉渴) was delicious with a generous serving of shredded meat

❌Skip the stinky tofu, while it is part of the store’s name, it was not stinky enough and the texture of the tofu was not crispy enough.

Line up behind the stall, next to the temple if you plan to eat in.  The line right in front of the stall is for take-out only

  • Sunshin Farmer’s Spring Onion Field (few stalls down from Ah Du Bor)

❌Skip, the scallion did not taste like the authentic scallion from Sunshin township (we had the scallion pancake made fresh from the scallion that we pulled from the farm, read my post here)

  • Lai Chi (賴記) Sunshin Scallion Biscuit

✅ Delicious and not oily at all. It was a bit of a wait but the biscuit/bun was super juicy.

✅ Do look for fruit stands for red guava and juice stands for a papaya milkshake.   I go for stalls with covers protecting the products as the motorbikes do allow to pass through the night market.

✅ Make your own black tea with milk (or goat milk).  Interesting concept as you get to choose between hot or cold (or half and half) and normal sugar level vs. less sugar.  I was debating on the goat milk and asked for a taste before committing to it (ask the bartender nicely and she will gladly let you have a taste), We ended up going with the cow milk.
