Making your own scallion pie
Yes, it sounds ridiculous to want to visit a scallion farm and pay $$ to perform labor work for them. But we gave it a try and it was so much fun!
We were given two choices of Spring Onion farms when we inquired about the "Experience Tour" at the Spring Onion Museum in Sunshin, Taiwan (三星):
Xinbao Onion Experience Farm (星寶蔥體驗農場): Tours @ 9AM, 10:30AM, 1PM, 2:30PM & 4PM
Cong Zai Liao Farm (蔥仔寮體驗農場)
We visited Xinbao, mainly because we were able to find out about their tour schedule ahead of time on their website. But both farms offer the same cost so definitely pick one that fits your schedule.
The cost of the experience was NT150, which included pulling out spring onion from the field and making your own scallion pie. They also offer options for those that just want to make scallion pie without stepping into the field. But what's the fun in that?
Pulling the onion was no easy task. The roots were extra long so I had to wrestle with them for a bit before successfully removing them from the soil. We washed them in a big pond and set them aside to be processed for the next tour group.
Next, we sat around the table to learn how to make our own scallion pie! DIY!! We rolled our own dough and filled it with chopped up scallions. Wei was being adventurous, he added 3 scoops instead of 2 as instructed. We then rolled the dough up into a round pie and handed it over to the ladies at the frying station. Around 10 mins later, we were eating the delicious scallion pie that we made with our own hands!! The scallions were so fresh and sweet that we almost wanted to join the next tour just to make another one! (probably easier and cheaper to just buy a premade one).
While we were making our own scallion pie, I looked over to the pond where we were washing our scallion earlier, and saw a grandma prepping more scallions for the next group. The grandma looked so tiny compared to all the scallions surrounding her!
