St. Kitts & Nevis

St. Kitts & Nevis

March 14 - 19, 2024 (6D5N): In search of the next best Caribbean Island to escape the winter blues, I found a rare deal with a direct flight from JetBlue. St. Kitts & Nevis (SKB), a country made up of two islands, marks as country #80 for me! Little did I know that Taiwan and SKB celebrated 40 years of diplomatic friendship in 2023. We began our journey by visiting Nevis, a quieter and smaller sister island of SKB. It is also the birthplace of Alexendar Hamtilon. Nevis is relatively small, so two days is enough to see the island. From there, you can return with multiple ferry options and spend another three days in St. Kitts.

*Highly Recommended

Tips:

  • There are a couple of ways to get from St. Kitts to Nevis: 1) Passenger ferry operated by various companies from Basseterre to Charlestown (EC$35 including port fee and takes about 30 mins), check the schedule here; 2) Water taxi operated by Blu Waves Water Taxi and Charters and Islander Watersports Nevis from Reagea Beach to Oualie Beach ($20 and takes about 6 mins), 3) a car ferry operated by Sea Bridge near Major’s Bay to Cade’s Point (EC$75/car + EC$20/passenger and takes about 20 mins). If you are going to Nevis right after landing at SKB, it is best to choose option one since it is the cheapest option. If you are staying in the southern part of St. Kitts, it is easier to depart from Reagea Beach. I’d avoid the car ferry option as the schedule is unreliable.

  • A rental car makes it easier to explore both islands. I’d recommend checking out Salty Rentals. You’d need two separate car rentals as crossing the narrow via car ferry is unreliable. In addition, one would need to obtain a local temporary license ($25) even if you have an IDP. Any rental company can issue it.

  • Although you must drive on the left side, it was easy as the roads were all paved, and cars generally obeyed the traffic. Do watch out for goats in Nevis.

  • The official currency is EC, fixed at 2.7 to 1 USD. Most establishments accept visas & MasterCard, or USD. Some places do take AMEX.

  • All the beaches on the island are free.
