Teddy Roosevelt's Birthplace
Did you know that Teddy Roosevelt's Birthplace is situated inside a Dutch brownstone on 20th street between Park and Broadway? Not only it is easily accessible, close to brunch places, most importantly, it is free!! It is open from Wednesday to Sunday (9-5pm) with guided tours at every hour starting at 10am and ending at 4pm (skipping noon). Guided tour is required to visit the house, but the gallery is available without the tour.
We came here after our Sunday brunch at La Follia. We had some time to burn before the 2pm tour so we went for a quick stroll at Flying Tiger Copenhagen. It is quite an interesting store if you haven't been there, someone described it as a mini Ikea. I found some 3D greeting cards for $1 (time to stock up!).
The tour is about 30 mins with a park ranger giving us the brief history about the family and the history behind the house. The house was actually rebuilt by the Women's Roosevelt Memorial Association in 1923 after the house was demolished in 1916 to make way for retail space. Teddy Roosevelt born inside the house on October 27, 1858 and lived in the house with his family until 1872, when the neighborhood began to become more commercial and the family moved to the suburb on 57th street and 5th ave (The Crown building today).
We were able to visit the main sitting room, library, dinning room, Roosevelt Sr. & Martha's bedroom, and the nursery room. Pictures were allowed so I am able to showcase the beautiful decor and pieces from the time period.
